Tasting note:
As is traditional for a Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this cuvée is a blend of different grape varieties. The majority of Grenache is supplemented by Mourvèdre, Syrah, Counoise, Muscardin and Vaccarèse. They are all planted in the appellation's famous pebble terroir. They have the advantage of collecting heat during the day before feeding the vine with it when night falls. The grapes are harvested by hand with a selective sorting process in both the vineyard and the winery so that only the ripest fruit is chosen. After fermentation, the wine matures for about 15 months in used barrels. This Châteauneuf is a charming cuvée and has an intense, crimson color in its youth that tends towards tile red as it ages. The nose is an explosion of red fruits and spices from the countless grape varieties it contains. In the mouth we find all the finesse of the appellation and the style that we have come to expect from Clos des Papes. The tannins are silky soft and the fruit is perfectly ripe. The wine has an unforgettably smooth texture. In terms of food pairing, we agree with the domain that recommends roasted dishes. It can mature for decades in the cellar and will undoubtedly reveal a nice surprise!.
The historic Clos des Papes, just next to the Papal Castle, has been managed by the Avril family for years. Paul Avril earned the domain its illustrious reputation and today his son Paul-Vincent continues the work, but with the modern touch typical of the new generation of winegrowers. The 32 hectare vineyard is spread over 24 plots on various microterroirs within the appellation. Syrah is planted on poorer, pebbly soils, while Mourvèdre is grown on more clay-rich soils. The property has been certified organic for more than 10 years. Yields have been reduced to produce less than 20 hectoliters per hectare, ensuring deeply concentrated wines. The entire identity of Clos des Papes is based on tradition and elegance.
