Woodbridge Zinfandel
Tasting note:
A smooth and lush red wine with a typical subtle black pepper from the Zinfandel grape with traces of berries. Wonderfully juicy and velvety soft.
Robert Mondavi
Robert Mondavi founded his winery in 1966 to produce wines in Napa Valley that would rank among the world's best wines. He chose To Kalon Vineyard in the heart of the Napa Valley as the home base for his winery.
Located in Oakville, California, this vineyard is known for producing some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the world, as well as for its Sauvignon Blanc grapes, from which Robert Mondavi created his signature wine, Fumé Blanc.
For more than four decades, Robert Mondavi Winery has led California's wine industry – and much of the world – with innovations in winemaking and viticulture.
Along with To Kalon Vineyard, Robert Mondavi Winery sources grapes from some of Napa Valley's finest vineyards, including Stag's Leap (Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc) and Carneros (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay).
Robert Mondavi believed that wines should reflect their origins, that they are the product of the soil, the climate and the careful management of those precious resources. He also believed in combining the latest techniques and technology with time-honored winemaking traditions. The wine and vineyard teams are proud to continue our founder's mandate to always aim higher, to pursue Robert Mondavi 's commitment to excellence with the same passion and innovative spirit with programs that break barriers and open new frontiers .
THE VINEYARDS
The famous varieties come from vineyards in the appellations of To Kalon Oakville, Stags Leap District, Carneros and Napa Valley.
KALON VINEYARD, OAKVILLE
Originally planted in 1868, the To Kalon Vineyard has been recognized as one of the best developed vineyards in the world. Ancient Greek for “the highest beauty,” Kalon is the historic vineyard that supplies Robert Mondavi Winery with grapes for its world-class Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve and Oakville District Cabernet Sauvignon, and is the exclusive source of our Fumé Blanc Reserve.
The Kalon vineyard is also home to the cherished I Block which is home to the 60 year old Sauvignon Blanc vines that give us the beautifully complex fruit for our I Block Fumé Blanc. Additional varieties planted in the vineyard include Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Syrah and Semillon.
WAPPO HILL VINEYARD, STAGS LEAP DISTRICT
The Wappo Hill Vineyard sits on 1,000 acres in the Stags Leap District of Napa beneath the steep jagged cliffs of the Stags Leap Palisades. The Wappo Hill Vineyard was acquired in 1969 and is planted primarily in Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is also where we buy the Muscat Canelli for our Moscato d'Oro.
The Stags Leap District growing area has distinctive gravel and loam soils, which retain less water and gently stress the vines, resulting in small berries and fruit with intense flavour. The steep, eastern cliffs retain and reflect the afternoon sun, while breezes from nearby San Pablo Bay maintain cool morning and evening temperatures. The vines thrive in this unique environment, producing wines with balanced acidity, velvety texture and ripe fruit flavors.
CARNEROS
Los Carneros AVA (Spanish for “the sheep”) occupies the southernmost portion of the Napa and Sonoma Valleys, just north of San Pablo Bay, where exposure to ocean breezes makes this the Napa Valley's coolest wine region. The location is ideally suited to our Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which thrive in the cool, long growing season with warm summer days tempered by sea breezes and mist.
Perfect first introduction to the generous and smooth taste of the Sunshine State of California. Robert Mondavi was a great promoter of California wines. He created the labels Woodbridge and Private Selection with accessible bottlings especially for a large audience. The wines with these names are fruity and smooth in taste and typical of the grape variety from which the wines are made. This certainly applies to two most popular Californian varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
