Tasting note:
Luis Canas' Reserva is a blend of 95% Tempranillo and 5% Graciano, which comes from 40 year old vines aged in American French oak for 18 months.
The Reserva has a subdued, subtle bouquet of dark cherries, raspberries, a hint of tobacco and balsamic vinegar. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, fine tannins and a bright core of cranberry and raspberry.
This leads to an aftertaste consisting of subtle leather and tobacco. Beautiful Reserva for an equally attractive price.
Effort, Tenacity, Passion for well done and a clear vineyard Philosophy. Four generations who wrote the history of our family "Familia Luis Canas"
For more than a century, our family has been making and selling traditional young wines made by the carbonic maceration method, which were made in the Cueva de los Curas, an old winery dug out of the ground and which is still part of the landscape in the area.
In the past, the wines were transported by Carlos Canas, father of Luis Canas (who passed away on December 2019 at the age of 91), in carts pulled by mules crossing the Sierra Cantabria and the Montes de Vitoria to areas bordering Bilbao and San Sebastian to more than 100 km from Villabuena.
In 1928, the founder, Luis Canas, was born a man with a perfectionist character, a worker like few others and whose motivation has always been the pride of achieving the best qualities in his vineyards, and therefore in his bulk wines, with which he conquered the palate of the major wine merchants, who at that time were located in the Alhondiga of Bilbao
It was in 1970 when Luis Canas entered the market selling bottled harvesters that until then had been sold in bulk. This same year and not far from Cueva de Los Curas they created the winery that bears the name and there they instilled the passion for the grape, the real architect of the highest quality wines in Rioja Alavesa.
1989 marks a new milestone in the future of the winery when Juan Luis Canas took the reins at the age of 33, bringing new air to the winery, maintaining the philosophy of work and family tradition thanks to his perfectionist character and non-conformist character. This means that he is not satisfied with making very good young wines, but also starts making new wines, promoting more and more aging wines.
In 1994 they built a new and modern winery, equipped with the best production systems, since then we at Bodegas Luis Canas have not stopped our efforts, with constant improvements and expansions of the facilities to continue to improve the quality of the wines.
Through the personality of Juan Luis, one of the most restless and innovative winemakers in the country, the experience and good work of the winery's team have allowed their wines to be recognized worldwide with the most prestigious awards.
In the heart of Rioja Alavesa, here the vineyards are sheltered by the Sierra Cantabria. Without a doubt one of the best wine regions in the world. The vines, for the most part small in size and advanced in age, are characterized by being located in calcareous clay soils of low fertility, usually on slopes and terraces with an ideal microclimate and an orientation that makes it unique.
Due to these circumstances we get low productions, bunches and small grapes but excellent quality. More than 1000 small plots are needed to complete the approximately 450 hectares between his own vineyard and controlled by the winery.
The respect for the environment and the effort of every human link involved in the process is the key to turning the benefits of rational viticulture into success
